We made nutrition education into a game!
SmoothieQuest™ is a 2D animated nutrition education game paired with a real smoothie-making activity. Children build a virtual smoothie, learn about ingredients, calculate smoothie costs, and then make and taste the real version.
In the game, children choose a character like Captain Kale or Professor Parsley; run through orchards, vegetable crops, and farmers’ markets; pull beets from the ground; pluck avocados from trees; and collect other ingredients to complete a smoothie mission. Players maneuver around sugar villains, such as Candy Ambusher, that interfere with progress. They carry a satchel that glows to alert the player if the contents are too sweet or too earthy, or balanced. The farmers’ market shows the real cost of food as children buy, sell, and calculate the price of their smoothie.
After gameplay, children make and taste a real smoothie based on the ingredients they chose. They see produce swirling into purples, reds, and greens. They explore flavor combinations they may have never tasted and learn that beets, ginger, kale, coconut, and dates can taste good and make them feel good. Children develop a real-life skill: how to make a nourishing and delicious breakfast, snack, or simple meal!
